ILA TESTIFIES AGAINST HARMFUL LEGISLATION
Members of the ILA testified before a committee of the Texas Senate against Senate Bill 2223, which added hurdles for container ships calling on Houston. Despite the best efforts of the ILA and supportive partners, the bill passed and was signed by Governor Abbott.
The legislation mandates two-way traffic in the ship channel and adds new requirements for vessels over 1,100 feet, only permitting them if they can be moved with efficient two-way traffic. In addition, the larger ships' requests to call on Houston must go through two public hearings and gain approval of 80 percent of Houston pilots.
